A Magazine Feature and A Give Away!

Monday, June 2, 2014

A super exciting thing happened to me and that was that I got to work with my daughter on a segment  for the magazine, New American Homesteader.  She was asked to contribute in the Canning and Preserving section and it ended up being a package deal, which was really fun for me.

It was sort of a dreamlike experience.  I couldn't believe it when we were saying things like, "The magazine gave us a deadline for the photos" or "We need to sit down together and proof everything we've written before submitting it to the magazine"!

As usual, there are some really great articles in this magazine.  It doesn't hit news-stands until tomorrow but I've had the privilege of having my copy for a couple weeks now.  I've read it from cover to cover and loved all of it.  You will too.

My daughter, Andrea, and I.

So, how about a give-away?  I've got magazines to give to two lucky winners.

In order to be entered to win, just answer this question in the comment section below:  Do you call it "canning", "preserving", or "putting up"?  (Here in the South the old timers refer to it as puttin' up!  I always have to think a second when they ask me "Did you get any tomaters put up yet"? )

I'll do a random drawing on Friday of this week!  (Be sure an email address is attached to your name so I have a way to notify you if you win!)

If you don't win,  I hope you will purchase the magazine!

P.S.  One of the most fun things about working with my daughter on this project was watching her at work with her camera.   She is such an inspiration for me in her photography.  Notice the cover photo on the magazine... that is hers!  (The very last page in the magazine is one of my photos!)

  2. That is exciting news!!! I don't think I've ever seen that magazine out this way. I still call it "canning", but not sure why, because I use mason jars or ziplock bags. Hope to win a magazine but will definitely try to find it this way.

  16. Dori, what a wonderful thing to be able to do with your daughter... A Magazine... Wow... This Ky country girl, calls it "Puttin" up for winter... I am the only one in my family besides my dad that enjoys all of this... I am always on the hunt for fresh veggies and fruit to "put" up , then I call my dad to see if he wants some goodness as well.. He is so funny, he is 73 and once he sees the finished product, he rubs his hands together and makes the same comment over and over... "This will sure be good when the Snow is flyin" I smile everytime... Such great memories being made.... One question where can you purchase this magazine? Thanks for a giveaway... csteel001@yahoo.com

  22. Canning! I was inspired by your and Andrea's blog to start canning! I just went strawberry picking this past weekend and canned "Strawberry Jam with Balsamic Vinegar and Black Pepper !" You must tell Andrea what a delightful taste it has and best of all I love how little sugar it needs. Why ruin perfectly delicious strawberries with all that sugar! I hope to one day have a beautiful canned goods pantry like the one Eldon built for you in the laundry room! I absolutely love the screen door that showcases all your canned treasures!

While I don't can much any more, I still love to freeze lots of fresh Michigan produce, especially strawberries, rhubarb and blueberries. I wonder if Tractor Supply has this magazine? 37. I find myself saying both canning and preserving. I have to say that it is so special to read the posts about the closeness you share with your daughter. What a blessing to see the love and respect you share for one another.

  38. I mostly call it canning, but also putting up... it sometimes sounds better... more accurate. I'm from Nebraska, but have lived in Colorado all my life.... My favorite? pulling out a jar of home canned tomatoes during the depths of a Colorado winter and tasting the summertime taste captured there.

  39. I call it canning, but I know many here in Colorado call it "putting up". Thanks for the giveaway!
