Dear Diary Fabric Collection

Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Do you ever want to write a blog post but you also want to get it "just right" so you keep delaying because you feel you just can't do it justice?  That is where I have been for over a month now.   But today I'd like to tell you a little bit about this amazing fabric collection called Dear Diary.

A little background to Dear Diary is that I've been following (via her blog for a long time and Instagram for the last couple of years) an amazing lady who has become my friend.  Her name is Minki Kim and in the sewing world you may know her as @zeriano.   Minki is one of the most talented people I know and her illustrated sewing technique is so amazing and so fun!  So... when I knew she had designed her first fabric line I was so excited to sew with it.

Then, before it was hardly available to the public, I got a message from Minki asking me if she could send me some of her fabric to sew with!  Seriously?  There is no better compliment given to me as a sewist than a designer asking me to create magic with her fabric!

I knew before the fabric even arrived what I wanted to do with it.  I knew that I had to make a mini quilt that really showcased each of the color ways as well as the beautiful words.

Isn't the art work just so darling?  This is Minki's style on everything she does.  Just adorable.

I also wanted to incorporate some of Minki's illustrated sewing style so I tried to mimic that along the top of the mini quilt.

One of my favorite fabrics in the collection are the little buntings, so naturally I felt that I wanted to incorporate that too!

I hand quilted every bit of the little mini quilt.  Not only do I absolutely love the joy of hand quilting but I felt that this sweet fabric design called for it and I wasn't wrong!  My quilting is not perfect, but it certainly is done with sheer love and joy!

I pulled all the mini quilts off my wall and rearranged, making room for my Dear Diary mini front and center.  I was going to gift it... and maybe someday I will.  But seriously, there was just no way I could part with it yet!!!

The next project I made with Dear Diary were day planner covers for two sweet homeschooled girls for their birthdays.

This was such a fun project that I was sort of winging the whole way; but they came out darling and the girls loved them.

I've been using the fabric for so many little things that I've lost count.  But I will say that one thing that I love so much has been incorporating some embroidery along with the precious designs in the fabric.

See what I mean?  Isn't it so darling?

You can purchase this fabric from many online fabric stores.  But one of my favorites is the The Fat Quarter Shop.  Here is a direct link to Minki's beautiful collection, Dear Diary.   You can purchase the entire bundle or you can purchase by the yard.

Thank you Minki.  Not only for your amazing fabric but for all the ways you inspire us!  (Be sure to visit Minki's blog here.  You will love everything she posts!)

  1. I love this fabric AND your mini quilt. I do much better with a pattern to work with so I was wondering if there is one for your mini quilt. It is a lovely pattern with this fabric. I can't believe that is her first fabric line. It is beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.

    1. Martha, I also do much better with a pattern! Here is a link to the pattern that I (sort of) used. I changed a few things to make it work for the size I wanted but it is what I used. Here is the link:

  5. Her color ways are so pretty and that pop of mustard/yellow/gold really takes your design over the top Dori! I love that her pink has a little brown in it, making it a sophisticated perfect pink for us grownup girls but still soft & pretty enough for a newborn. Your beautiful sewing & design showcases her fabrics in the best way; no wonder she & other designers send their samples to you! And I love the planner covers too!
