Re-learning An Old Skill

I love to embroider.  The sad thing is that I get so busy with other things that I forget how much I love it.  (And I also forget how to do certain stitches.)

I have a book that I love.  And all I have to do is open the book and my heart starts racing and I'm ready to grab some needle and thread!  The book is called Embroidered Effects by Jenny Hart.

I recently started a new project that I am excited about.  I'm using some of my vintage feedsack fabric scraps that I absolutely adore!

I cut designs and ironed them on to pieces of muslin, drew in some of the lines and designs, then began some simple embroidery stitches.

Isn't the blanket stitch the sweetest?  It is one of my favorites.

I love that you don't need much to embroider.  Needle, thread and little scissors.  (And my favorite book of stitches!)

I'm not going to divulge the full project because I'm not finished and because I don't know the end result quite yet!  But this lovely old window that was given to me is part of the package!

Don't you think old windows, vintage feedsack fabric, and embroidery just go hand in hand together?

I've got a lot of stitching left to go, and quite a bit of figuring to get it all together.  But, in my mind it makes sense!

Do you ever have a project that makes perfect sense in your mind.... and then doesn't work?
This might be one of those.

I'll keep you posted!

  10. I imagine you'll have a wonderful time teaching your granddaughters to embroider. It's a skill like many others that are being forgotten. :)

  11. I love to embroider and so far this summer, I haven't pulled a single stitch. Sad. But I'm itching to get back to it. I tend to do a lot during football season. We watch the game (usually Denver Broncos) and I always have hand embroidery going. I love what's taking shape with your embroidery project. I'll look forward to the end result. Love Jenny Hart!

  14. Hi... I followed your blog from FGFriday...
this is adorable. I bet your project turns out lovely. Even if it doesn't turn out how you envisioned it; sometimes plan-b is good. ;) I think I know what you may do with the pieces when you are making...but will come back and see for myself!
your hand work is precious. I don't do much embroidery. I've tried...but not my cup of tea. I think I might like to give a try again!
    cute project.

  15. Oh I love it. What a great job you did. Did you leave the edges all raw except for the embroidery? I love this. I am following you now. Have a good week.

  18. Aw, your so talented and creative, and I love the vintage sacks!!!!! I recently got the bright idea of Natalie and I doing cross stitch together....this is how that went: Natalie decided to not even follow the picture, but to make up her own entirely...I did about 8 stitches, all in the wrong place, and I couldn't get them back out, so I cut it all up. No I didn't but I wanted too. love you!

  20. I have been reading your daughter's blog, Keeping It Cozy, for about a year. I stumbled onto your's but then couldn't remember the name of it. She kindly sent the link to me. I love what you and your husband have done with the farm. I hope that you know how blessed that you are. Some of us can only dream. I am embroidering names on the squares of a house quilt. My hands are resisting after years of not doing any hand sewing. Now I want to finish so that I can do some flour sack fabric applique. Love the little banners!
