Batman Memories!

I recently made these Batman costumes for two little boys for their birthdays.  But I had to have models to make sure they fit and, conveniently, my grand-girls are the same age so they got to be the models.

This is what I ended up with when it was time to take them off!  I guess little girls like to be Batman too?

The real reason I'm even writing about this is because of the memories involved.  You see, my son Logan (who is now 29 years old now) loved Batman.  I purchased this pattern from McCalls and made him his first Batman suit when he was two years old.  Unfortunately, that was just the beginning.  I have proof in the fact that I have the above pattern in sizes all the way up to 10!  I made him a new suit every year.  (I also made them for his friends and his cousins too!)  Logan came up with ideas every year to make it better.  He would sit in the chair next to where I was sewing and he would say, "But Mom, I want it like this...."

His biggest complaint was that the ears wouldn't stand up.  So we would put heavier stuff inside them every time!  (Above picture:  proof that the ears won't stand up!)

This Batman suit was not for Halloween.  Believe me when I tell you that it was worn on a daily basis.  We have a story of Logan, when he was 9 years old, with his first horse and it was a common sight to see him in his Batman suit riding his horse... trotting along the dirt road with the cape flying out behind him!

I remember the cape had to get bigger and bigger... better for flying you know!

I love things that remind me of when my kids were little.

The pattern is no longer available.  (Unless you purchase it used from eBay of course.)  But trust me, they don't make the new Batman suits the same.  This pattern is the full deal.  The suit, the cape, the hood, and the belt.  I designed a mask too when my son got older and said, "But Mom, I need a mask"!

Jillian has the bat hanging thing down to a fine art!

And Rosy totally has the pout down to a fine art!

We still have a few boxes in storage and one of the boxes is my photo albums and pictures in shoe boxes.... otherwise I would've had a few pictures of my son here too!

For some reason making these little Batman suits hit me pretty hard... I could actually feel myself going back in time to my sewing table with that darling little blonde boy sitting next to me saying, "Mom, you have to make the cape have little curves in it because that's how the real one is."

Does this happen to you too?  Where suddenly something triggers a memory so profound it takes you right back in time?

I'd love to hear one of yours.

  1. My gosh! I was going to read your post about your tacos & hear you already posted again! Honestly I was texting my sister about our mom! Being a great grandma soon again. Our mother made our clothes and our Halloween costumes in the 60s. Still have a few patterns too. This post really resonates with me about my mom, made everything with love, be it clothes or cooking. Brings tears. She's 80 and can't really do those things anymore. My sister does now. Love, love the pictures of your grand girls flying around like Batman or Batgirl! Even the pouty ones. Such a wonderful Grandma you are! Kathleen in Az

    1. Kathleen - sometimes the posts come quickly if I'm in a blogging frame of mind.... sometimes I have to dig deep to have something to share! :-) Thanks for always reading and commenting. I have a mother that made everything with love also. I am so thankful for that example.

  2. Dori, my mother passed away three years ago. She had six children. I am the oldest. She made our clothes when we were young and made things for us and our families when we were older. Sewing was her passion all her life. Since I sew, I inherited all of her sewing machines, notions, patterns, and fabric. I shared with all my siblings. Some sewed and some didn't. I understood how we all felt when she was no longer with us. It was the memories associated with the sewing she did for us and others that made all of us remember Mama. So happy to see you are carrying that legacy forward with your family.
    Take care.

    1. Emily - oh how awesome to have your mother's sewing things. It is very interesting this sewing thing... and how it really brings the memories back. I look forward to being able to teach my little grand-girls to sew and I'm thankful we live close enough to them that I can do that.

  3. This is precious! Do you have any of the old costumes you made? My grandmother made a lot of clothes for my sister and I and I kept them and my daughters wore them. Yes, I have flashbacks of those little girls, both married now, and I miss them so much. Their little arms around my neck, me holding those tiny hands. Hopefully some day I'll have some more little arms around my neck in the form of grandkids:>)

    1. Kathleen, I saved the bits and pieces of batman suits for years and then I must've finally tossed them at some point, because I do not have them. :-( Believe me, they were so worn that they were rags. He was the funniest little boy with his batman suits! I wish I had saved them though. It kind of makes me sad. And when I read your comment, I actually cried. Like tears rolling down my cheeks. Those little arms around our necks are so incredible. And I AM so very thankful for my little grand-girls that will sit with their faces buried in my neck and say "I love you Gram". No feeling like it and you will be AMAZED! :-)

  4. I know just what you mean, Dori. Recently all the Facebook postings of the first day of school was one of those times! But the biggest trigger so far has been the birth of my grandson (8 weeks now) who looks so much like his dad, our oldest son. When we are with him it becomes a mixture of reliving our son's babyhood and anticipating our grandson's growing up years!

    1. Barbara, I know that feeling exactly. Little Jillian is so much like her Mommy was that it is almost eery. Then Rosy is like our son, Logan. She has his same wild and goofy personality and it is kind of funny to see a little girl that is so much like her Uncle! (Of course the miracle is that our son-in-laws mother sees him in both of the girls!)

  5. My older kids are 34, 30, and 26 and I know exactly what you mean... Certain situations will take me back in time and there is such a bittersweet feeling connected to them... sadness that my three little girls are grown and on their own (one in Africa, one traveling the U.S. for work... only one lives close by) but also pleasure that they are such lovely young woman and such good friends. (I'm guessing you "get" that part, with your daughter living so close...:)

The batman costume is awesome, I'm thinking that a couple of little boys are going to be very happy when they see them!

    1. Maura, yes that bittersweet feeling. I know that feeling. So thankful to have grown children that are happy, healthy and love us.... BUT I sometimes wonder if I enjoyed their growing up years to the fullest. So now I make sure to enjoy the stages of my little grand-girls.

I love what you said about your daughters being such good friends. That is such a comfort to us Momma's isn't it?

  6. This was so sweet! I just made a simple Batman cape when my boys were small. My 13 yr old daughter asked him for it last month, to use at church camp. It was so funny to hear him (at 21 yrs old)...telling her she had better not let anything happen to it. lol

  7. Oh, how I loved this! Your batman models are so adorable!

At this stage in my life, I have a 30 year old son & his family next door and a 26 year old son & his wife who is expecting their first baby. We're all ranching here together. My grandgirls always ask me, "Did your kids do this when they were little?" Yes, yes, yes! They remind me of so many things.

Our daughter always dressed up in Little House On the Prairie dresses. A friend and I kept our girls in lots of prairie dresses. Grace wore hers so much that I patched them up so she could continue playing in them.
